Engaging families is a key component to increase academic achievement at Smithridge ES. As such, we have many opportunities for parent/community involvement. We have a monthly “morning mug” meeting that enables us to meet with our parents to provide updates and seek feedback. Additionally, monthly academic parent nights, engage families together in learning. The STEM Academy also hosts several family nights. Grade levels send home weekly newsletters highlighting current standards in Reading and Math and address how parents can support their children in learning those standards. In addition, a school-wide monthly newsletter is sent to all families. The parent involvement facilitator, a dean, and a parent attended a two day conference covering how schools can create authentic family engagement. All newsletters and presentations/meetings are translated into Spanish. Smithridge has also been successful in engaging the community in partnerships to benefit students. The school has 43 volunteers this year that have contributed approximately 1,500 hours of support. Nevada Energy has partnered with Smithridge on several school beautification projects. Smithridge was also award the Cool Cafe cafeteria renovation courtesy of Aramark.
