Parent and community communication at Parson Elementary School was encouraged and maintained as a two-way system. School and classroom newsletters were used to share school events, district curriculum, information, school data and instructional programs with the entire school community. ParentLink, a parent notification and school-to-home communication tool which utilizes e-mail and a voice-mail system, was implemented as a way of routinely communicating reminders and upcoming events. Teachers created and maintained school progress notes, which also included e-mails. Administration had an open door policy and was available to discuss any issues or concerns with parents. Teachers were available to hold conferences before and after school and during their preparation periods. The PTA met regularly as a group, with teachers and administration, with a focus on the school improvement process. The PTA actively planned after-school events, raised funds and participated in instructional activities during the school day. The parent-to school connection is respected and encouraged at Parson Elementary School.
