The Washoe County School District sets out to create an education system where all students achieve academic success, develop personal and civic responsibility, and achieve career and college readiness for the 21st century. |

In 2010-2011, SSHS was acknowledged for many outstanding and noteworthy achievements in the areas of academics, athletics, and activities. A few of the major highlights are listed below.- Two students were named 2011 National Merit Finalists.
- Two students were named "Commended Students" in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program.
- Thirty-three students earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on AP Exams in May of 2010.
- SSHS placed third in Academic Olympics.
- The Cougar Communicators were named as one of the top 32 teams in the NYU International Public Forum debate competition.
- The Leadership Program received the Wild West, Silver Star and National Gold Council of Excellence Awards.
- The Girls Volleyball Team won the Academic State Championship with a team GPA of 3.88.
- The Cougar Band placed 2nd overall at State Championships.
- The Girls’ Softball Team won their third State Championship in May of 2010.

Goals and Objectives |
Goal 1 Freshmen Success - 82% of ninth grade students will earn a minimum of five credits by June 2011.
Objective(s): Freshmen performance will be measured by the percent and number of students receiving 5 or more credits. A 10% decrease in the number of credit deficient students is expected in all subgroups.
Goal 2 Graduation - 78% of twelfth grade students will graduate in June of 2011.
Objective(s): Performance will be measured by the percent and number of students receiving a standard, honors or advanced diploma. Performance will include all students within the four year cohort and will be disaggregated by all subgroups.
Goal 3 College Readiness - The number of students taking AP courses and college entrance exams will increase by 10%.
Objective(s): 27% of graduates will take an AP course (47% will score a three or higher on the exam); 41% will take the SAT (with a minimum 1518 mean score); and 41% will take the ACT (with a minimum 21.3 math score).
