Sparks High School students benefitted from several specially funded programs during the school year as a result of grants funded through the E.L. Cord Foundation and with State SB 185 grant money.- Sparks High School made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for the first time in four years during the 2007-08 school year.
- School stakeholders completed the every six year Northwest Association of Accredited Schools accreditation review process.
- Twenty freshman students were selected to participate in the UNR/AT&T Dean’s Future Scholars program for the next four years.
- Approximately 100 parents attended class with their children in November in conjunction with National Parent Involvement Day.
- Forty-three juniors were inducted into the SHS Chapter of the National Honor Society, the most ever during one induction.
- The number of seniors who took the ACT college entrance exam doubled that of previous years comprising 60% of the class.
- The Iron Horse Battalion once again earned the Honor Unit with Distinction Award during their annual Formal Inspection.
- The boys’ basketball team was Northern 3A League Co-Champions. Angel Guillen and Coach Dick Lee received post-season honors.
- The winter cheerleading team placed second in show and earned the Silver State Spirit Award in the 4A State competition.

Goals and Objectives |
Goal 1 All students will increase literacy skills.
Objective(s): The number of non-proficient students will decrease by at least 10% as measured by HSPE ELA scores by June 2009. According to 2007-08 SY data, school wide, 86% of Sparks High students were proficient in the HSPE ELA; by the end of the 2008-09 SY, 92% of students will be proficient in the HSPE ELA.
Goal 2 All students will improve mathematics skills.
Objective(s): The number of non-proficient students will decrease by at least 10% as measured by HSPE mathematics scores by June 2009. According to 2007-08 SY data, school wide, 68% of Sparks’ students were proficient in math; by the end of 2008-09 SY 75% of students will be proficient in math, based on the HSPE.
Goal 3 All students will meet the minimum 90% attendance requirement as established by the Washoe County School District.
Objective(s): The number of students who fail courses due to not meeting the WCSD 90% attendance requirement policy will decrease by 10% by June 2009. 15.64% of students failed courses due to the 121 code during the 2007-08 SY. This number will decrease to 5.64% by June 2009.
