The Washoe County School District sets out to create an education system where all students achieve academic success, develop personal and civic responsibility, and achieve career and college readiness for the 21st century. |

O'Brien continues to focus on academics. As O'Brien moves forward, there is a focus around STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math being incorporated into the curriculum for all students.- 30 students were selected to participate in our newly created STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) academy.
- 7th grade and 8th grade teams developed STEM curriculum for their students using Project Based Learning this year.
- O’Brien’s algebra program increased participation by 40% this year. 65% of our students passed the Algebra Credit by Exam.
- 8th graders participated in an Immigration Project. Students researched their immigration history and presented a Chautauqua.
- O’Brien hosted a Study Circle this year. A group of parents and teachers worked together to talk about issues around race.
- 8th graders had the opportunity to attend the Holocaust Symposium in March. A survivor shared her story with students.
- O’Brien students and staff hosted our annual WARC Sweetheart Dance for persons with special needs. It was a huge success.
- O’Brien hosted community events. Our Halloween Carnival, Easter Egg Hunt and International Night were well attended events.
- Our student leadership class planned many events and activities for our students as well as our community members.

Goals and Objectives |
Goal 1 All students will meet or exceed standards in math.
Objective(s): By 2011, 30% of 8th grade students will participate in Algebra, 45% algebra students will meet standards as measure on the CBE, and 64% of all students willmeet or exceed standards as measured by CRTs.
Goal 2 Increase Language Arts Performance.
Objective(s): By 2011, 67% of all students will meet standards as measured by CRTs, and 56% of all 8th grade students will meet standards as measured by the State Writing test.
Goal 3 Create a positive climate and culture.
Objective(s): By 2011, increase parental engagement with the school and student engagement in curriculum and decrease office referrals by 30%.
