Mission Statement
The Washoe County School District provides each student the opportunity to achieve his or her potential through a superior education in a safe and challenging environment in order to develop responsible and productive citizens for our diverse and rapidly changing community.
 
Highlights
Esther Bennett Elementary School is committed to teacher collaboration and to data-driven decision making to enhance student achievement.
  • The fifth grade state writing scores increased 18.3% over the previous year with 43.1% reaching proficiency.
  • The PFO, E.L. Cord Foundation and Rotary Club of Sparks funded the purchase and installation of new playground equipment.
  • The Buffalo Buzz was published three times this year which highlighted school events and student writing.
  • Three full-day kindergarten programs provided cognitive, social, physical, & emotional benefits for all students.
  • Reading and math specialists provided direct small-group instruction to meet the needs of struggling students.
  • Our Parent Facilitator provided resources, activities and support to the students, staff, and community.
  • A student assistance program (BIT) tracked student progress and provided interventions for below-grade-level students.
  • The Baldrige Model, a structure and format designed to support PLCs to improve student achievement, was used.
  • The Reading First Forward Grant provided professional development for teachers in literacy instruction.
 
Goals and Objectives
Goal 1
Writing goals are to increase to at least 45% or more the number of 5th grade students proficient on the 2009 NAWE.

Objective(s):
Specific Activities: A school-wide writing program concentrating on writing process and writing traits
Curriculum: Match State Writing Standards
Instruction: 30-60 minute block daily, consultant support
Assessments: Writing rubrics, ongoing scored writing samples and constructed responses

Goal 2
Literacy goals are to maintain/increase CRT scores by 5% in each subgroup on the 2009 CRTs for grades 3-6.

Objective(s):
Specific Activities: HM Program
Curriculum: Match State Literacy Standards/Essential Skills
Instruction: Master schedule w/90 min. literacy blocks for K-6
Assessments: HM, Running Records, QSI, Sight Words, Fluency, Common, Formative and Summative Assessments

Goal 3
Math goals are to maintain/increase CRT scores by 5% in each subgroup on the 2009 CRTs for grades 3-6.

Objective(s):
Specific Activities: Focus on a school-wide basic math facts goal and on formative assessments
Curriculum: Match State Math Standards/Essential Skills
Instruction: Master schedule w/60 min. math blocks for K-6
Assessments: Common, Formative and Summative
