Mission Statement
The Washoe County School District provides each student the opportunity to achieve his or her potential through a superior education in a safe and challenging environment in order to develop responsible and productive citizens for our diverse and rapidly changing community.
 
Highlights
SSES embraced positive behavior supports school wide. The schools code “We do our Best to be our BEST!”and the Otter Be’s of Being Respectful, Responsible, Safe, and Kind were modeled and practiced.
  • Classroom guidance, Otter Pop rewards, and classroom positive rewards helped to support the Otter Be’s all year long.
  • Academically, SSES continued proficiency on AYP goals. Achievement goals for special education and ESL students were met.
  • School wide Aimsweb and classroom data in reading and math helped identify students needing additional RTI support.
  • Our ESL students made AMAO with 55% increasing 25 points in their overall scores and 21% reaching proficiency.
  • SSES united with Faces of Grace Outreach and Cub Scouts to provide clothing, blankets, and food to community programs.
  • Over 200 fleece blankets were made by many grade levels and contributed to Kids Cottage and cancer patients.
  • Harrison Pennington,  Mrs. Post's 4th grade student , won third place in the Step Up to Writing Writing Award Contest.
  • SSES parents supported two full day kindergartens in 2008-2009. Over 55 kindergarten students participated in these programs.
  • PTO supported additional music and movement assemblies. All  enjoyed African drum music and dancing with the Platt Bros.
 
Goals and Objectives
Goal 1
All students, especially LEP and FRL students, will increase their reading skills in fluency and comprehension.

Objective(s):
All students, especially our LEP and free and reduced lunch students, will increase their reading proficiency by 10% in the areas of fluency and comprehension as measured by the Criterion Reference Test spring of 2009.

Goal 2
All students, especially LEP and IEP students will increase their skills in basic math facts, and problem solving.

Objective(s):
All students, especially our IEP and LEP students, will increase their mathematics skills by 10% in the areas of  basic math facts, and problem solving as measured by the Criterion Reference Test spring of 2009.

Goal 3
All students will increase proficiency in writing by using focused instruction,daily practice and student monitoring.

Objective(s):
All students will increase their writing proficiency by 5% through the use of focused writing instruction and daily practice as measured by baseline writing assessments, student monitoring, and the 5th grade state writing proficiency test spring of 2009.
