Mission Statement
The Washoe County School District provides each student the opportunity to achieve his or her potential through a superior education in a safe and challenging environment in order to develop responsible and productive citizens for our diverse and rapidly changing community.
 
Highlights
Desert Heights has improved their overall student achievement assessment scores due the increased student and staff focus on literacy and math instructional strategies.
  • Fifth grade writing scores went up by 13% due to efforts by both staff and students in emphasizing writing traits.
  • We continue to implement single sex classrooms in kindergarten, fifth and sixth grades.
  • The Mock Election on October 31, 2008 allowed children to have a voice in the presidential election.
  • The Science Fair included student demonstrations and has been exceptional with 15 projects advancing to Regionals.
  • The Response to Intervention plan along with the Desert Heights Intervention Assistance Team has been exceptional.
  • To assist the teachers with the Response to Intervention and the Tier processes,  information is on the "M" drive.
  • Three of our teachers are part of the Math & Science Lemelson Master Program at  the University of Nevada, Reno.
  • Students in grades three through six grade participated in dance and arts through the Artist-in-Residence Program.
  • The Team Up Program offered a morning session before school helping students become successful readers.
 
Goals and Objectives
Goal 1
All students, especially our English language learners and special education students will increase ELA by 10 percent.

Objective(s):
All students will increase ELA scores by 10 percent during the 2008-2009 school year.  This will be accomplished by Reading Recovery, Break through-to-Literacy, Read 180, the morning and afternoon school programs and Tier interventions.

Goal 2
All students, especially our English language learners and special education students will increase math skills.

Objective(s):
All students will increase math scores by 10 percent during the 2008-2009 school year.  This will be accomplished by supplementing Touch Math, Everyday Math computer games, Accelerated Math, math support in the morning and afterschool programs, and  math Tier Interventions.

Goal 3
All students, especially English language learners and special education students will increase their writing scores.

Objective(s):
All students will increase writing scores by 10 percent during the 2008-2009 school year.  This will be accomplished by supplementing the Step-up-to-Writing program.
