Kate Smith’s faculty continues to strive to meet the needs of each student. All students receive an additional 40 minute literacy intervention block, which focuses on the CORE reading strategies.- 56% of our classrooms are equipped with Activboard technology and all classrooms have a lumens and LCD projector.
- Our entire staff was trained in SIOP, Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol, to better meet our students’ needs.
- Five teachers were accepted into the UNR Lemelson Cohort, two in Math and Science and three in Literacy Studies.
- Sparks Rotary continued its generous support by providing Christmas shopping sprees, library books and guest readers.
- 80 students participated in a weekly back pack food program, which provides students with a bag of groceries for the weekend.
- Working jointly with Truckee Meadows Community College we offered two sessions of English classes for our parents.
- We successfully implemented Cub Club which are whole school team building groups who meet monthly.
- Western Nevada Supply, Wal-Mart and Trainor & Associates supported our school with their generous donations.
- The Rock Church adopted over 120 students during Christmas, provided prizes for family events and donated 90 Easter baskets.

Goals and Objectives |
Goal 1 All students will increase their reading skills especially in the area of reading comprehension
Objective(s): Decrease the percent of non-proficient students by 10 percent based on the 2008 English Language Arts CRT. Increase the reading fluency of all students (2-6) based on CBM benchmark scores. Increase the percent of students at grade level on Scholastic Reading Inventory exam by 20%(Baseline 25%)
Goal 2 All students will increase their mathematics skills, especially in basic computation.
Objective(s): Decrease the percent of non-proficient students on the State CRT by 10%.. Increase the percent of students who score at or above the 50th percentile on the CBM Math grade level benchmark(Baseline 34%)
Goal 3 All students will become active participants in the learning environment.
Objective(s): Increase the use of cooperative learning strategies within each classroom Introduce technology into 100% of the classrooms to engage students
