Mission Statement
It is the mission of Variety School to provide a positive and safe educational environment that promotes learning and literacy. All school, vocational, and community experiences increase acquisition of skills, student knowledge, and character with a commitment to assure the least restrictive environment and transition to the workforce and becoming a productive member of society.

Highlights
Variety trained teachers in specific ways to intervene in reading deficits. An interventionist was provided to help teachers with behaviors. Token board economies were developed for specific classes.
  • Behaviors in autism rooms have diminished. Applied behavior analysis is being used with students on a daily basis.
  • Reading levels have risen due to the fact that teachers have been trained in discrete reading strategies for their students.
  • A learning strategist position was introduced to staff and has helped teachers hone their direct instruction with students.
  • A group of students have been using the System 44 reading program in addition to discrete reading strategies.
  • Vocational activities have become more focused on student ability and teachers are using the vocation to teach life skills.
  • Students have learned how to accept feedback better according to data collected.
  • A test group of teachers have piloted a data system developed to monitor student behavior and work concepts.
  • Teachers adjusted to assure that the common core standards are their individualized lessons.
  • All students were tested either using the Nevada Alternate Assessment or the Criterion Referenced Test.

Goals and Objectives
Goal 1
All students will improve in the area of reading.

Objective(s):
Students will be pre- and post-tested to clearly define their areas of need. After the pre-testing has occurred, the teacher will design a specific plan to increase a student's reading level.

Goal 2
Test all students to assure that Variety meets the standards in the percentage of students needed to make AYP.

Objective(s):
Attendance incentives will be offered to make sure students improve attendance and take their tests during the testing windows.

Goal 3
All students will improve their behavior. Behavior impacts learning, so when this improves, all learning improves.

Objective(s):
Data will be taken on behaviors and closely monitored. Token boards will be developed to decrease unwanted behaviors and reward positive behaviors. Discrete trials will be used throughout the day to improve student behavior.
