Mission Statement
The Charles A. Hughes Middle School staff and community is dedicated to promote in each student a desire to Honorably Achieve to the best of their ability by a Willingness to work hard to obtain the Knowledge which will prepare them for a Successful high school experience.
 
Highlights
Hughes Middle School is proud of the many accomplishments of its staff and students. As a school, we are dedicated to the academic success of each student.
  • Through ARRA funds we were able to provide after-school tutoring for our students in mathematics and English.
  • Structured Teacher Planning Time (STPT) was incorporated daily to ensure a school-wide focus on state standards.
  • School-wide RTI was established to provide curriculum for students in need as well as for those students that excel.
  • Once a month we conducted a math or reading literacy night for parents.
  • Advanced band competed in the district-wide band festival and received a superior rating.
  • A Hughes Middle School student made it the finals of the district spelling bee.
  • Student recognition included Student of the Month, Honor Roll luncheon, and attendance rewards.
  • Students and teachers traveled to Virginia for an educational tour supplementing previously taught curriculum.
  • A Hughes Middle School teacher was selected as teacher of the year by the VFW.
 
Goals and Objectives
Goal 1
Students will improve achievement in mathematics.

Objective(s):
All students, and all subgroups, will achieve the mathematics target of 65.9% or attain Safe Harbor by reducing the number of non-proficient students by 10% as measured by the March 2011 mathematics CRT.

Goal 2
Students will improve achievement in English language arts (ELA).

Objective(s):
All students, and all subgroups, will achieve the English language arts target of 63.8% or attain Safe Harbor by reducing the number of non-proficient students by 10% as measured by the March 2011 reading CRT and the 2011 NDE 8th grade writing proficiency test.
