The mission of Howard Wasden Elementary School is to involve parents, staff, community, and students in the full development of the potential of all students academically, socially, and emotionally to become life-long learners by providing a safe, nurturing, and motivating educational environment. |

The staff of Howard Wasden Elementary provides a well rounded educational experience for students.- 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade students benefitted from class-size reduction, allowing more time for individual instruction.
- Title I funding was used to maintain lower class sizes in 1st and 2nd grades.
- Title I funding was used to provide small group math tutoring before school.
- Students participated in school-wide writing prompts designed to promote mastery of writing traits.
- Teachers received ongoing training for the Write Tools, a program that teaches writing strategies and proficiency.
- Teachers used Thinking Maps to develop and challenge students' comprehension and critical thinking skills.
- Teachers refined grade level enrichment/intervention times to meet the specific needs of students.
- Students at Wasden Elementary continued to gain fluency with computation using FASTMATH and Math Blasters.
- Students were assessed using AIMSweb to monitor progress toward grade level reading and math standards.

Goals and Objectives |
Goal 1 Teachers will utilize strategies to improve instruction, increase engagement, and use differentiated instruction.
Objective(s): Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will show increased achievement of 7% and/or a 10% reduction in the number of non-proficient students in reading and math as measured by the spring 2011 Nevada Criterion Referenced Test (CRT).
Goal 2 All students will increase achievement in writing proficiency.
Objective(s): Students in grades 1-5 will show progress toward grade level writing standards with 70% of students passing the May Mock Writing Exam. Fifth grade students will show an increase of 10% on the Nevada Writing Proficiency Exam.
