Our mission at Heckethorn Elementary School is to foster a safe and nurturing learning environment where students feel empowered to reach their full potential, both academically and socially. |

During the 2010-2011 school year, Heckethorn Elementary provided a variety of programs and curricular opportunities to help students become engaged in instruction and experience academic success.- Implemented a 90-minute reading block for focused instruction and differentiation to meet individual student learning needs
- Utilized AIMSweb assessments in reading, spelling, and math to allow for common benchmark assessments in grades K-5
- Used common grade-level writing prompts, writing rubrics, and the Write Source writing program to support writing
- Attained full participation of students with special education needs in grade level instruction in reading, writing, and math
- Provided 30-minutes of intervention/enrichment time for reading and writing daily in each classroom
- Offered after-school tutoring sessions to increase skills in reading and math for identified 2nd-5th grade students
- Hosted the Scottish Sevens rugby team for the LV rugby tournament as part of the Inaugural Adopt-a-Country program
- Completed all six requirements for the Great American Award program by 58 fifth grade students
- Completed all requirements for the Nevada Citizenship Award program by 36 fourth grade students

Goals and Objectives |
Goal 1 Students will increase achievement in English language arts (ELA) and math.
Objective(s): Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will achieve the ELA target of 63.8% proficient and will achieve the mathematics target of 65.9% proficient on the 2011 Criterion Referenced Test by decreasing the percentage of students in the "approaches standards" range.
Goal 2 Students in grade 5 will increase their writing proficiency.
Objective(s): Grade 5 students will achieve 60% proficient and will decrease the percentage of students in the "approaches standards" range by 10% on the 2011 Nevada Writing Proficiency Exam.
