Mission Statement
The mission of the Manuel J. Cortez Elementary School is to foster a safe environment in which the school community encourages high expectations and all learners reach their full potential.
 
Highlights
Manuel J. Cortez ES is proud to announce the highlights for the 2010-2011 school year:
  • We provided full-day kindergarten.
  • We offered early literacy programs including Waterford and Breakthrough to Literacy.
  • We had class-size reduction in 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades.
  • We offered before-school and after-school reading programs, including Reading A-Z.
  • Read 180 was used in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades to increase student achievement.
  • Students in grades 2-5 used Study Island computer software to improve test-taking strategies.
  • ST Math was used in grades 2-5.
  • There were single-gender classrooms in grades 1-5.
  • The Title-I Irene Espinoza Parent Center was open to parents and families.
 
Goals and Objectives
Goal 1
Students in grade 5 will increase achievement in writing as measured by the 2010-2011 Nevada Writing Proficiency Exam.

Objective(s):
As measured by the Nevada Writing Proficiency Exam, all subgroups will increase to 46% proficiency.

Goal 2
Differentiated instruction & scaffolding strategies will be used to improve instruction & increase student achievement.

Objective(s):
As measured by classroom observation data, teachers will increasingly use scaffolding and differentiated instruction strategies. Students in grades 3-5 will achieve the ELA target of 63.8% and the mathematics of 65.9%, or attain safe harbor, as measured by the CRT and the Nevada Writing Exam.
