Derfelt Empowerment School has made AYP for 6 consecutive years. Empowerment, RTI, academic interventions, and academic enrichment have all led to increased student achievement.- Empowerment status allowed for flexible scheduling of academic intervention and enrichment based on standards.
- Standards-based instruction was delivered through technology with a Smartboard and Elmo in every classroom.
- Kagan Structures cooperative learning opportunities in every grade were part of academic expectancies for Derfelt.
- Departmentalized 5th grade provided specially designed instruction in core subjects and bridged transition to middle school.
- Overall achievement in language arts and mathematics for 3rd and 4th grades increased.

Goal 1 Increase math achievement for all students in grades 3, 4, and 5 on the state of Nevada Criterion Referenced Test (CRT.)
Objective(s): Increase math achievement for all students in grades 3, 4, and 5 on state CRT's; specifically the Black/African American subgroup in: Numbers and Operations, Problem Solving, Measurement, Geometry and Data Analysis. By 2013 90% of all 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students attain a proficient CRT score.
Goal 2 Increase reading achievement for all students in grades 3, 4, and 5 on state of Nevada CRT's.
Objective(s): Increase reading achievement for all students in grades 3, 4, and 5 on state CRT's; specifically the Black/African American subgroup in: Developing an Interpretation, Demonstrating a Critical Stance, Word Analysis, Comprehension and Evaluating Informational Text. 90% of students proficient on CRT.
