Mission Statement
The Ruthe Deskin community is dedicated to facilitating a safe, respectful, positive environment that promotes academic excellence, social success, and encourages students to become responsible citizens and creative, confident life-long learners.
 
Highlights
Ruthe Deskin is proud of our many student successes! We continue to increase student achievement with the major focus on student learning and learner engagement.
  • Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 achieved a composite score of 68.5% in ELA on the Nevada CRT. The Nevada target was 63.8%.
  • Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 achieved a composite score of 71.8% in math on the Nevada CRT. The target was 67.2%.
  • Students participated in interactive cooperative learning activities using Kagan Structures.
  • Additional morning reading intervention/enrichment time was provided for students in grades 2 - 5.
  • After-school Math Academy and Summer Science Academy provided help for students in math, reading, writing, and science.
  • School-wide use of Calkins Writing Curriculum, Step Up To Writing, & Writer’s Workshop was used to improve writing skills.
  • School-wide skill and strategy-focused, differentiated reading instruction was provided in grades K - 5.
  • Gifted education students in grades 4 and 5 attended the Continental Math League competition and Astro/Sea Camps.
  • Character skills recognition programs included Deskin Diner Club, Eagle of the Week, and Eagle Feather tickets.
 
Goals and Objectives
Goal 1
Teachers will maximize instructional time to improve instruction, increase student engagement, and achievement in math.

Objective(s):
Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will achieve 65.7% or attain safe harbor reducing the non-proficient students by 10% in math. IEP students will show an increase of 10%. In measurement and geometry students will increase from 52% to 62% in 3rd, 35% to 45% in 4th, 20% to 30% in 5th.

Goal 2
Teachers will maximize use of instruction time to improve student engagement and achievement in reading and writing.

Objective(s):
Third, fourth, and fifth grade students will achieve the reading target of 63.8% or attain safe harbor reducing non-proficient students by 10%. Specifically, the IEP sub-group will show an increase of 10% and the FRL sub-group will show an increase of 8%.

Goal 3
Teachers will maximize use of instruction time to improve student engagement and achievement in reading and writing.

Objective(s):
The percentage of proficient 5th grade students will increase on the 2010-2011 Nevada Writing Proficiency Exam by 7% from 52.5 % to 59.5%. The percentage of proficient students in grades K-4 will increase from the beginning of the year to the end of the year on the school-wide prompt.
