Reading/Language Arts:Foundation for CA Early Literacy Learning research-based teaching methodologieskey elements: oral language; phonological skills; read aloud; shared,guided, &independent reading; directed, independent, &interactive writing;interactive editing; & oral presentation. Early Literacy Learning (CELL) (K-3) emphasizesthe instructional focus ofteaching reading & writing.Literacy Learning (EXLL) (3–6)focuses on reading & writing in the content areas while recognizing that some children in the intermediate grades are still struggling readers.Once children have learned to make meaning from the printed word & understand& simple, well-written stories, they can begin to build confidence & fluency in their new reading skill. Writing:through the writing process approach, students practice writing for real reasons & being taught the basic skills of spelling & punctuation in the context of writing.Our writing goals are thatstudents write more often, more effectively, & write with greater willingness & enjoyment.Math:Bridges to Mathematics(K-2)provides extensive practice in key mathematical concepts, & is organized into integrated units of study.Everyday Mathematics (3-5)builds on & extends concept understanding. MaThematics (6)investigatesconcepts through exploratory, activity-based learning. Fast Mathguides mastery of computational strategies. Science: Full Option Science System (FOSS) hands-on investigationsallows studentsto appreciate the scientific process, learn important scientific concepts, & develop their ability to think scientifically. Students are led to think about the purpose behind the hands-on activities, to compare the actual results of their experiments with the predicted outcome, & find out what may explain the difference. Students actively construct ideas through their own inquiries, investigations, & analyses, promoting science literacy. Social Studies: A variety of materials, resources, primary sources, strategies, & technologies are used to engage students & tofoster enjoyment of history, cultivating historical empathy for knowledge of different times, places, & cultures.Literature is used to enhance history studiesto emphasize heroes, adventure, moral challenges, faraway places, & distant times so that students’ imaginations are captivated, broadening the perspective they have on their nation & the world & inspiring them through examples of ethical behavior.
