LCSD recognizes the need for and specifies the Nevada State Standards as the basis for instruction in all schools. The District Improvement Team also recognizes a need for the district to align instruction to grade level standards for consistency across LCSD and has made this a priority goal. In 2009-2010, LCSD began a process of clarifying and expanding the role of the standards through development of a K-8 curriculum pacing guide for standards implementation in English language arts, science, and mathematics. The "LETTER-SPACING: -0.1ptpacing guide serves as an instructional pacing calendar for teachers to use in lesson planning. Classroom teachers will use these documents as the scope and sequence for planning and delivering instruction and for monitoring student learning. All elementary and middle schools began implementation of the curriculum pacing guides in 2010-2011 to focus on instruction. In 2010-2011, LCSD will complete the curriculum pacing guides by creating pacing guides (9-12) in English language arts, science, and mathematics. In 2009-10, the state and district correspondingly adopted the National Common Core Standards in ELA and math. As a result, LCSD has adjusted the timeline for completion of the 9-12 pacing guide for English, language arts, science, and mathematics.

Focused attention will be given to developing a plan for how LCSD will implement the Common Core Standards including professional development for staff. LCSD provides opportunities for all students to learn from a variety of curricula and supplementary materials "LETTER-SPACING: -0.05ptin a myriad of settings to meet our number one priority – student achievement. Historically, textbooks and instructional materials have been adopted by each site in accordance with site-based decisions. LCSD coordinates committees to review and recommend adoptions in accordance with State and District adoption guidelines as they align with District and site improvement plan goals. This process has been followed for the adoption of mathematics, social studies, and science materials. In 2010, LCSD planned an English language arts textbook adoption, however, budget reductions prevented a district-wide (K-12) adoption. Consequently, textbooks purchased were limited to the following: health science occupations and computer literacy (5-8). LCSD applied for and received grants to purchase nursing assistant textbooks.
variety of supplemental materials are used to augment grade level textbooks. From 2009-10 LCSD provided supplemental materials in the following areas: ECE curriculum, Sheltered Instruction materials, K-5 classroom books to support Daily-Five literacy instruction, senior advanced algebra software and calculators, co-teaching, instructional technology (e.g. iPod Touch), math and ELA manipulatives K-8, nursing assistant program, and computer software for computer literacy 5-8, remediation software, and secondary literacy software.
LCSD will continue to focus on ensuring alignment between curriculum, instruction, and assessment through the use of the Nevada Comprehensive Curriculum Audit Tool (NCCAT) for schools and LCSD.

schools in LCSD use the State standards to guide instructional planning and assure a viable curriculum for all students. High school students who earn a Lyon County School District Standard Diploma must earn 22.5 credits. Included in the total credits are four credits of English, three of mathematics, two of science, three of social studies, and two of physical education. Students may receive a Standard Diploma, an Advanced (Honors) Diploma, and an Advanced (Honors) Diploma with a Career and Technology endorsement. LCSD master list of high school courses contains over 180 classes that can be taken for credit; including many AP options. Middle school students must successfully pass 12 of 14 credits to be eligible for promotion to the next grade. Course offerings include English language arts, mathematics, fine arts, computer education, occupational education, physical education/health, science, and social studies.
LCSD has established an alternative educational program for at-risk students, medically homebound students, students seeking credit recovery and students seeking to complete credits outside of the regular school day.
From 2009-2010, LCSD has focused on improving instruction through a variety of district initiatives. These initiatives were identified through the analysis of student achievement, classroom walk-through data, and teacher effectiveness research. Review of school and district level data suggest the need for professional development for teachers and administrators. In order to provide this comprehensive measurement of instructional practices the LCSD is continuing to implement the following professional development: Instructional Consultation, SIOP, GLAD, Daily 5/CAFE, Co-teaching, Depth of Knowledge (DOK), Balanced Math, advanced algebra, Writing Traits, Write From the Beginning, constructed response, and Common Core Standards.
Other professional development that supports the instructional process includes: IEP compliance, inclusive practices, test taking strategies, using technology for instruction, Handle with Care, bullying prevention, and the effects of living in poverty. LCSD will continue to collaborate with the RPDP to provide high quality sustained professional development to teachers and administrators (e.g. DOK, balanced math, NCCAT-S, and writing).
