Lander County School District - Curriculum Details

Staff and parent committees have been involved in a review and implementation of Nevada Educational Standards over the past several years. The State Standards are the core of our curriculum. Each site has the responsibility to confirm that state standards are taught in LCSD schools. Each instructor is expected to post the standard, objective, and goal for each area that is being taught in the room. The instructor is also expected to explain the objective and connect it to life experiences. This is checked regularly by building administrators and expectations are very high in these endeavors. The district is verifying that concepts addressed on state tests, including Criterion Referenced Test, and Proficiency exams, are part of the district’s curriculum. Other assessment instruments are used to insure that individual students master standards and are not left behind. School improvement committees have spent considerable time analyzing testing information to determine curricular and instructional deficiencies. The district wants to assure parents that students have an opportunity to learn concepts prior to facing them on a state test. Our Board of Trustees approved Core Curriculum Overviews for all grade levels. The Board supports the integration of the standards into our curriculum. These overviews are meant to serve as teacher and parent guides. These overviews provide parents with an understanding of the concepts and standards that are being taught. They also provide teachers with an instructional outline as they prepare lessons; as well as power standards that are the minimum basics for all course construction. Current District education practices and curriculum focus on academic achievement. While this achievement is the primary purpose of the District, it is but one element of student learning and development. Our District expects our educators, communities, and board members, to work together to provide an educational process to prepare students to be successful in life. Implementation of this concept results in successful learners who are knowledgeable, emotionally and physically healthy, civically active, artistically engaged, prepared for economic self-sufficiency, and ready for the world beyond formal schooling.
